Remember that all donations are tax deductible. This
list is part "wish", and part "staples". There are
things on this list that are the common needed supplies for the day to
day running of sanctuary, and the rest are things that would make the
day to day A LOT EASIER!
- Bleach - We always are using bleach around
the compound. Whether it's to clean the habitats, the food prep area,
the cat's bowls. We go through it pretty fast.
- Pool Chlorine - Every time that it rains, or
if it's just a stretch of hot days, we lose chlorine in the pools. If
you have a pool, and your dog swims in it, you've probably heard from
your pool store that you need to use more chlorine. Imagine how much
it takes for tigers weighing anywhere from 350 - 800 lbs. Also, since
tigers like to use the pools for a toilet since the water hides their
scents, we use even more chlorine to keep the pools clean.
- Paper towels - If you saw how clean we keep
the food prep area, you'd know that we go through a lot of rolls.
- Garbage Bags - We use the 33 gallon size as
it fits our garbage cans, and is a perfect size for all of the outdoor
clean up that we do as well.
- Golf cart or similar small work vehicle - We're
on 6 acres out here, and we do a lot of hauling of materials, yard waste,
tools, etc. We have a work truck, but getting it back around the habitats
is a bit tricky. Even if the cart is used, or not in the best of shape,
we'll take a look at it. We do have some volunteers who are quite handy
with mechanic's tools!
- Cat Toys - This is a bit of a tricky area.
We are always trying to find new things for the cats to play with. Durability
is one thing, but the cat's safety is the most important. These cats
have immense power, so the materials that make up the "toy"
are important. If it's got bolts, nails, screws, or any metal in it,
then we can't use it. It never fails that if you say "Well, there's
no way that they're going to break that ".....they will. We also
have to consider the material itself as the cats do sometimes eat their
toys! Footballs and basketballs used to be great toys
until the cat's began eating the little pieces that they chewed them
into. What has worked great so far, has been Rubbermaid rubber garbage
cans and the tube sections of children's playground equipment such as
the giant funhouses that you see at all of the fast food restaurants.
The cats still rip them up pretty good...but they don't eat them. So,
if you see something or have something, give us a call, or e-mail us
and we'll see if it's something that we can use.
- Ziploc Freezer Bags - We use the gallon size
to store the cats' meat
- Ladders - We currently have a pretty shakey
6ft A-frame ladder, a 10ft. A-frame ladder, and a very old 16ft. extension
ladder. Our palm and coconut trees are way to high for that now. A 24
ft, or even taller extension ladder would be great.
- Wheel Barrow - We're down to one now. We use
them to haul fresh sand and gravel into the habitats.
- Evacuation Trailer - We need to build a custom
evacuation trailer, so we're always looking for a decent used trailer.
We could also use someone who can weld, and who could help bring the
plan to life. Keep in mind that the trailer would have to safely house
5 tranquilized cats, who at some point will wake up and wonder where
they are. So, we need something with a decent size in order to keep
the cats at a safe distance from each other, and that is enclosed to
protect them from the elements while evacuating.
- Food - We feed everything fresh, and raw, with
no additives or preservatives: chicken, beef, pork, turkey, and horsemeat.
- Lawnmower - We currently have a little 21"
pushmower that we use inside of the habitats, and 42" riding mower
that has been recently donated. Since we're on 6 acres, there's nearly
4 acres in total that we have to cut, so an additional riding mower
would be fantastic.
- Lumber - We can always use 2x4"s, and
2x6"s. We are constantly changing worn, warped, badly weathered,
and in some cases, chewed up boards on the hutches for the cats inside
of their habitats. Pressure treated wood is preferred, since the wood
is out in the weather, and the fact that we do not put any protective
coatings on the hutches for the health of the cats.
